Next time you hurt yourself and begin swearing don’t feel bad. There’s actually some good that can come from the swearing according to an article on the LiveScience website. The article covered research which shows that swearing can actually help increase a person’s pain tolerance. The study consisted of 64 undergraduate volunteers who submerged a hand in a tub of ice water for as long as possible. The volunteers did this twice. The first time they could repeat a swear word of their choice. The second time the volunteer could repeat a common word for table. Researchers had thought that swearing actually lowered a person’s tolerance to pain since it emphasized the sensation. As it turns out, the exact opposite was true.
